8x10 oil on paper
This little cutie is a commission piece I just finished last night.  He was a bit of a struggle because I haven't painted a portrait in a while.  I think he turned out well, though.  Thankfully this little guy has pushed me back into painting again.  I have been a bit indifferent about it lately..I think because I don't have a clear direction for my work.  The cure for this is just jumping back into it and working through it..at least that has worked in the past.

Of love

6x6 oil on panel

Really having fun with the combination of hard straight lines with the loosely painted flowers.  Makes an interesting composition.  I need to play with more negative space and different patterns..and maybe patterns that are more hidden in some areas..Oh so much to learn.

Open spaces

5x7 oil on panel

Left lots of negative space in this one.  I wanted the feeling of open air and room to breathe.  Again, playing with the stripes in the background.  I am liking them so far, but need to play more with the lines fading in and out of focus.

Latest article

6x6 oil on paper
This is Ellery, a sweet girl I painted a while ago.  I am posting her to go along with my latest article on emptyeasel about having fun with portrait painting.  The silly ones are always the best in my opinion.

Late blooms

5x7 oil on panel

The farmer's market has the best selection of cut flowers this time of year..unfortunately it doesn't last too long.  I am experimenting with my backgrounds.  I am playing with simple patterns to add more interest.  I like how the hard lines contrast the soft edges of the flowers..we will see where it takes me.

Latest article

Check out my latest article on emptyeasel on how to paint white tulips.
In other news..my lovely daughter is back in school which means our family will be back into a routine..which means I will be getting back to painting here very soon.  It got a bit spotty over the summer and I am really missing the daily painting so be on the lookout for more regular posts.

6x6 oil on panel

I have painted this sweet girl a few times, and in fact, have painted this particular pose before.  I love painting children's portraits, but there are a special few who make it a real joy for me..this is one of them.

Just us

6x6 oil on panel
I had to paint them while I had the chance..that is why I keep posting white tulips.  Sometimes obsession is a good thing right?  I got one more done before they expired..they sure were beautiful and they will last forever in the form of little paintings.

3 in white

5x7 oil on panel

Another one of my pretty tulips.  These beauties opened up for me right away and are just lovely.  I have to paint as many as I can before they leave me.  I had to change the background color on this one a few times before I got to this yummy chocolate color.

Look inside

5x7 oil on panel

Back at it again.  Still trying to get back onto a regular painting schedule.  Committing myself to shows helps to light the fire.  I will be at "Meet me on the island" this Friday June 6 in Downtown South Bend with my little paintings.  If you are in the area, stop down to the South Bend Museum of Art outside on the river for some music, food and art.

My daughter gave me this petunia plant for Mother's day and it bloomed right away...of course I had to paint it.  It has been a while since I painted..I am getting used to my new schedule trying to make time for everything.  I should be posting more regular now.

5x7 oil on panel
So this is the subject of my latest tutorial for emptyeasel.com.  I decided to tackle colored glass wine bottles since they are one of my favorites to paint.  Click here to check out the article.

More tulips!  Can't wait for them to start popping out of the ground soon.  I have been prompted to make some larger paintings..so that is something I will be working on in the future.

Spring glow

6x6 oil on panel $60
I tried to intensify the colors with this one and keep my brushstrokes clean and simple.  I am liking my work better when I intentionally simplify.

6x6 oil on panel

Finally got back to painting!  I started a new job and got sick at the same time so I slept more than I painted.  The new job is a part time position as Assistant Curator for the South Bend Art Museum which I am beyond happy about.  The new painting here is my hopeful representation of spring moving in and winter going away.  We need some color around here..I know it is just under the surface.  Until then I will continue to paint some spring.

I am so ready for spring, but these happy daffodils make me feel a bit better.

Hello yellow

7x13 oil on primed cardboard $30
There is still a lot of snow on the ground here in Indiana, so I went out and bought a little spring.  Really looking forward to the flowers popping through soon..we need some color around here.

I love to experiment with new ways to paint.  It always makes you think differently.  I have always admired the daily works of Lisa Daria and how she can abstract a floral.  Her use of light and color is beautiful and seems effortless.  These studies on cardboard are influenced by her work.

6x6 oil on primed cardboard $25
I love using different things to paint on. It keeps you from being too careful, you can just let loose and try new things without feeling like you are going to waste a canvas. I decided to cut up some cardboard and play with some new ideas.

Lost weekend

5x7 oil on panel
I just loved this sign. A lost weekend can mean a lot of things, but for me it reminds me of my time in Key West, a break from real life for a few days with my best friend..a lost weekend in Margaritaville.

Warm breezes

6x6 oil on panel $60
This is from a photo I took while in Key West this past year.  I can still feel the warm air blowing through my hair...I may need to find myself a pina colada soon.  The sun is actually shining here in Indiana today and the snow is starting to melt..bring on the warm weather!

From darkness

5x7 oil on panel $55
I apologize for the photo of this one, the colors are a bit too bright.  The background is black and dark gray and the flowers are darker.  Anyway, I gave myself 1/2 hour to complete this painting.  I used to love timed gesture drawing and painting when I was in college.  It really makes you focus on the overall subject and makes you work quickly.  I will repost a better photo later.

Morning color

6x6 oil on panel $60
I used the light from my studio window instead of my usual spotlight this time.  It gave a very different feeling..sort of a cold bright light.

Dream of color

5x7 oil on panel $55
It is so fun to play when painting flowers. You have a lot of freedom to change up edges and soften areas while still keeping the recognizable shapes.

Red star

5x7 oil on panel
Needed to paint some spring, hoping it will bring it along sooner than later.  Haven't done flowers in a while and thought I would play around a bit with my edges further..all while dreaming of warm weather.

What is left

5x7 oil on panel $55
I always love a good still life painting.  Just searched the fridge and found these yummies..they look pretty too.

Wino 39

5x7 oil on panel $55
click to buy
Adding to my wino series.  Trying to stay loose and play with color..my photo turned out a bit light unfortunately but it still comes across ok.  I am itching to paint some florals but I haven't found a good place to buy cut flowers at a good price around here...and spring is still a ways away.
In other news, my floral paintings are marked 1/2 off until Feb. 14 on my Etsy site.

5x7 oil on panel $55
This gate is at the southernmost tip of Key West Florida. I really love the hard black straight lines of the gate against the cloudy sky and water.

Pink house

6x6 oil on panel
This is another from my photos taken in Key West.  I loved the color palette on the island.  Most of the buildings and houses are white or pastel colors..all with metal roofs by the way because of those crazy hurricanes that like to swing through there occasionally.

White house

5x7 oil on panel $55
I recently took a trip to Key West with my best friend and got very inspired by the architecture, colors and hot weather..oh, and a few margaritas.  I took a lot of reference photos and this is the first painting from them.  This cold weather is perfect for painting island life..the memories are keeping my warm.

Through the trees

6x6 oil on panel $60
This is another from the photos I took this past fall.  I really love painting the little bits of sky through the leaves..those negative spaces are my favorite.  Loving the color too, especially now when everything here in Indiana is mostly brown and white.

Post holidays

6x6 oil on panel
Finally back to a regular schedule.  Now that the holidays and snow storm are over, for now, I can get back to work.  This painting is a recent commission done for a family in North Carolina, I love her wispy ears.
In other news, here is my latest article for emptyeasel.
