Golden leaves 2

6x6 oil on panel $60
This is another detail from some photos I took on the trails.  I like the play between detail and abstraction in these paintings.  I didn't want to get too detailed with the leaves and focus more on their light and shadow, and I love how the background almost reads like stained glass between the branches and the sky.

Golden leaves

6x6 oil on panel
There are some beautiful trails here in our new neighborhood.  All the trees turned a golden yellow in the fall which made for a gorgeous walk for me and my dog Buddy.  This is from a photo I took before all the leaves fell off the trees...and a picture of my trail loving pooch.

Me and my shadow

3x5 oil on primed paper $40
I am working on my next article for emptyeasel and it is all about shadow.  I set up this still life specifically to show how shadows can be used as a design element in composition.  These articles are fun to write because they make me break down my thought process so it makes sense to people.  Completely different way of looking at what I do.

5x5 oil on primed paper $40
I have been doing these small studies on primed paper which have abstract drawings from my daughter on them. They are great because you can still see some of the drawing underneath.  So actually this is a painting done by two artists.

Fresh air

2.5x3.5 oil on primed cardboard $15
This is another tiny ACEO painting.  That was a treeline in the distance, but after I simplified it they look more like mountains.  That would be considered a happy accident.  In other news, I was lucky enough to be chosen for DailyPaintworks spotlight interview this week.  Thanks DPW!

Autumn fruit

3x5 oil on primed paper
I love painting small studies on primed paper.  The texture is nice and they seem old and precious in some way.  I am kind of all over the place with my subject matter lately.  I may start work on a large painting soon, I will post progress when I do.  In other news, here is my latest article on emptyeasel about using color to enhance the mood of a painting.

2.5x3.5 inch oil painting on cardboard $15
This tiny painting is called an ACEO, which stands for Art Cards Editions and Originals.  They are basically artist trading cards.  They are fun and challenging to paint.  This is another Michigan sky taken from my photos.

Lake at sunset

6x6 oil on panel
This was from another photo I took along Lake Michigan.  Again, nature provided the awesome color range.

What a day

6x6 oil on panel
This was from a photo I took in Grand Haven, Michigan on the beach at sunset. Nothing but beautiful memories of that place.  In fact, my husband asked me to marry him on that beach..no wonder I love it.

6x6 watercolor on paper
This face belongs to a friend of mine.  She has the most wonderful, expressive boys and I love to paint them.  He just seems like he is about to yell, "You kids stay off my lawn!"  I think I am understanding the whole artist muse thing, although mine are usually kids.  There is another friend of mine who has a daughter I love to paint as well..she had been my subject many times..and hopefully in the future too.  I am glad these people are my friends and understand that I am not a creepy artist looking at their kids

5x7 ink on paper
For this one I only used black ink and water.  Really fun to play with..you can get some rich darks with the ink.  I like playing around with the shapes and shadows, trying to decide what to leave simple and what to get detailed with.  I am happy how she turned out.

6x6 watercolor, ink and charcoal on paper
This is a sketch for my sugar skull series.  Playing with ink and charcoal again..things I have had packed away for a while.  Always good to play around with materials and see what happens.

Thinking spring

8x8 oil on panel
This is a painting that I just got back from a previous show.  I painted it specifically for the show and never had it for sale online.  Keeping track of my inventory is getting tougher as I acquire new venues for my work...but I am not complaining.  In other news, the SMALL WORKS artist reception went really well this past Saturday.  We had many sales opening night, which is a very good sign.  This is a photo of the participating artists.  If you are in the Grand Rapids area, please stop by West Coast Coffee downtown.  Great people, great coffee and beautiful, affordable original artwork.
