6x6 oil on panel
The colors in this are reflective of this time of year. The warmth of the flowers echo the fall colors starting to show. The cool blue working its way into the painting suggests winter is around the corner. There is something special about this time of year.

5x7 oil on panel
I love the little bits of negative space between the flowers and edges of the panel.  I am actually writing an article about negative space in painting.  I have always been drawn to those spaces and use it a lot in my compositions..too much for some I suppose, but I love it.

The blues

5x7 oil on panel
I love painting wine and flowers together.  The organic shapes of the flowers against the hard shine of the bottle..very different but complimentary.

Wino 35

5x7 oil on panel
Ahh, back to the Wino series..seems like a good time to dive back in.  Actually got inspired by a new space that will be carrying my work here in Mishawaka.  Art + Elements is the studio and gallery of artist Stefanie Buysse.  She has some wine themed artwork in her space which prompted me to start the series back up...and so the Wino series continues.

Grandma's roses

8x10 oil on panel
Roses always remind me of my Grandmother. She grew roses along the walkway to her house. I never really thought much of them when I was a kid, but now I treasure the memories of Grandma and her roses.
In other news, I have an art tutorial published on to paint a portrait in oil.  I hope to continue writing for them every month.  It is a fun new process for me.

Pink prom

6x6 oil on panel
This reminds me of my friend's prom dress from 1990. It was so pink and so fluffy..more of a princess dress really.  I am still experimenting with abstracting the backgrounds with these..I think it worked well in this one.

Color of white

6x6 oil on panel
I love the fact that white is never just white. There are so many colors that make something look white..same thing goes for black too. These roses were no exception.

Garden roses

5x7 oil on panel
More from the photos of the rose garden at Midland Center for the Arts.  I am playing with the backgrounds on these.  Usually my backgrounds are very simplistic so I really focus on the subject.  I am finding that if I abstract the shapes they don't compete.  Seems to be working so far..always learning.

Pink sunshine

5x5 oil on panel $50
The Midland Center for the Arts has a beautiful rose garden.  I took a bunch of photos when my daughter and I visited over the summer.  Needless to say there will be a series of rose paintings.

Autumn still life

6x6 oil on panel $60
The air is crisp and the apples are on the trees...feels like fall to me.

5x7 oil on panel
More from the market.  These are fun to paint..just a few strokes and you have a flower.  Here is the sketch for this one too.

Which way

 5x7 oil on panel
I got some flowers from the farmers market this past weekend.  Needless to say, I will be painting florals this week.  I thought I would post my original sketch with this one.  I always love process photos to see a bit of the thinking that goes into artwork.  Sometimes the sketch is actually better than the finished piece.

Last bit of sun

5x5 oil on primed paper $50
Painting sky is fun. You have endless options and the color range is fantastic. You can push the clouds around and play with the sunlight..very addictive.

Close to home

5x6 oil on primed paper
This was from a photo I took on a drive home..when home was Michigan.  I did a similar painting a while back from the same photo.  I usually get rid of my reference photos once I complete a painting, but I have a few that I keep..this is one.
