Wino set

all 5x7 oil on panel
I have been a busy little elf working on holiday commissions.  These are a few that were shipped out yesterday.  I hope all the recipients enjoy their artwork.
In other news, I somehow managed to squeeze in a trip to Key West before the holiday and I took lots of reference photos.  Can't wait to get started on some new work inspired by the island.

The Holidays

It is that time of year when I am working on commissions for holiday gifts.  This little girl is going to make someone's Christmas morning special.  I hope you all are staying warm and giving extra hugs to your family and friends.

Golden leaves 3

5x7 oil on panel $55
All the leaves are gone now, but I just keep on painting them.  I may do something similar to these but larger for a show coming up in the spring.  It is an abstract show, which will be a challenge for me but a fun one.
In other news, my latest article is on it out.

Let it snow

woodcut print on rice paper $20

Golden leaves 2

6x6 oil on panel $60
This is another detail from some photos I took on the trails.  I like the play between detail and abstraction in these paintings.  I didn't want to get too detailed with the leaves and focus more on their light and shadow, and I love how the background almost reads like stained glass between the branches and the sky.

Golden leaves

6x6 oil on panel
There are some beautiful trails here in our new neighborhood.  All the trees turned a golden yellow in the fall which made for a gorgeous walk for me and my dog Buddy.  This is from a photo I took before all the leaves fell off the trees...and a picture of my trail loving pooch.

Me and my shadow

3x5 oil on primed paper $40
I am working on my next article for emptyeasel and it is all about shadow.  I set up this still life specifically to show how shadows can be used as a design element in composition.  These articles are fun to write because they make me break down my thought process so it makes sense to people.  Completely different way of looking at what I do.

5x5 oil on primed paper $40
I have been doing these small studies on primed paper which have abstract drawings from my daughter on them. They are great because you can still see some of the drawing underneath.  So actually this is a painting done by two artists.

Fresh air

2.5x3.5 oil on primed cardboard $15
This is another tiny ACEO painting.  That was a treeline in the distance, but after I simplified it they look more like mountains.  That would be considered a happy accident.  In other news, I was lucky enough to be chosen for DailyPaintworks spotlight interview this week.  Thanks DPW!

Autumn fruit

3x5 oil on primed paper
I love painting small studies on primed paper.  The texture is nice and they seem old and precious in some way.  I am kind of all over the place with my subject matter lately.  I may start work on a large painting soon, I will post progress when I do.  In other news, here is my latest article on emptyeasel about using color to enhance the mood of a painting.

2.5x3.5 inch oil painting on cardboard $15
This tiny painting is called an ACEO, which stands for Art Cards Editions and Originals.  They are basically artist trading cards.  They are fun and challenging to paint.  This is another Michigan sky taken from my photos.

Lake at sunset

6x6 oil on panel
This was from another photo I took along Lake Michigan.  Again, nature provided the awesome color range.

What a day

6x6 oil on panel
This was from a photo I took in Grand Haven, Michigan on the beach at sunset. Nothing but beautiful memories of that place.  In fact, my husband asked me to marry him on that wonder I love it.

6x6 watercolor on paper
This face belongs to a friend of mine.  She has the most wonderful, expressive boys and I love to paint them.  He just seems like he is about to yell, "You kids stay off my lawn!"  I think I am understanding the whole artist muse thing, although mine are usually kids.  There is another friend of mine who has a daughter I love to paint as well..she had been my subject many times..and hopefully in the future too.  I am glad these people are my friends and understand that I am not a creepy artist looking at their kids

5x7 ink on paper
For this one I only used black ink and water.  Really fun to play can get some rich darks with the ink.  I like playing around with the shapes and shadows, trying to decide what to leave simple and what to get detailed with.  I am happy how she turned out.

6x6 watercolor, ink and charcoal on paper
This is a sketch for my sugar skull series.  Playing with ink and charcoal again..things I have had packed away for a while.  Always good to play around with materials and see what happens.

Thinking spring

8x8 oil on panel
This is a painting that I just got back from a previous show.  I painted it specifically for the show and never had it for sale online.  Keeping track of my inventory is getting tougher as I acquire new venues for my work...but I am not complaining.  In other news, the SMALL WORKS artist reception went really well this past Saturday.  We had many sales opening night, which is a very good sign.  This is a photo of the participating artists.  If you are in the Grand Rapids area, please stop by West Coast Coffee downtown.  Great people, great coffee and beautiful, affordable original artwork.

4.5x8 watercolor on paper
Hope you all had a wonderful Halloween.  This little lady is Kelly, she will be with me this Saturday for the SMALL WORKS show in Grand Rapids.  I have been having fun playing with watercolor lately.  Haven't done it in a while..not sure why.  Anyway..very inspired by day of the dead, Sylvia Ji and Alfons Mucha.

5x7 watercolor on paper $40
Having fun experimenting with my sugar skull series.  I played with watercolor and ink today..made me feel like a kid again.  Getting ready to show these at the SMALL WORKS show this Saturday at West Coast Coffee downtown Grand Rapids.

5x7 oil on panel $55
Experimented with this one a bit with color and texture.  I used some pencil in the shadow areas and an overall brighter color pallet.  It was fun and I like the result.
Other latest tutorial on painting glass is now on click here to check it out.

5x7 oil on panel
Another of my sugar skull portraits.  She will be in the SMALL WORKS show at West Coast Coffee on Nov. 2nd.  These portraits have really inspired me to challenge myself and try a new direction with my work.  Time to start experimenting...the fun stuff.

Ready to go

I have been busy getting all these beauties framed and ready for the dot shop located inside the South Bend Art Museum.  I was very lucky to get this opportunity and I am excited about future possibilities with them.

Wino 38

5x7 oil on panel
Yep, another one.  If you haven't noticed I love painting the subject of wine.  The reflections are great to play with and for some reason I always have the subject matter around the house...hmmm.  Paint what you love, right?

Fall colors

5x7 oil on panel
I love this time of year.  Nature pretty much gives you all the subject matter you need.  When I set up this still life I thought it needed another element in the I went out into the back yard and grabbed some leaves off our tree..instant subject matter, love it.

Wino 37

5x7 oil on panel
Went a bit darker with this one..tis the season for deep red wine.

Dark rose

6x6 oil on panel $100
Another portrait inspired by the day of the dead festival and the sugar skull makeup designs.  This one actually turned out looking like Marilyn Manson a bit...not intentional and kinda creepy but perfect for this time of year.

Wino 36

5x7 oil on panel $55
Another wine still life..I never get tired of painting them.  This one is a result of my next article on how to paint glass.  I am currently working on it and I will post the link when it is published.

5x7 oil on panel $100
This is a portrait of my friend Sally from a past halloween.  She had a friend do her makeup for an event she was working.  I am loving painting these sugar skull portraits..very different and fun for the season.

6x6 oil on panel
October is here so I thought I would get into the spirit of the season. Inspired by the day of the dead festival and all the colorful costumes and face paint.

Coffee break

6x6 oil on panel
I am a coffee lover.  I don't think I will ever get tired of using it as a subject in my paintings.  It makes me feel warm and fact, my husband first told me he loved me over a cup of coffee..good memories.
In other news, my tutorial on how to use negative space in painting in now on emptyeasel for those of you who were interested.

6x6 oil on panel
The colors in this are reflective of this time of year. The warmth of the flowers echo the fall colors starting to show. The cool blue working its way into the painting suggests winter is around the corner. There is something special about this time of year.

5x7 oil on panel
I love the little bits of negative space between the flowers and edges of the panel.  I am actually writing an article about negative space in painting.  I have always been drawn to those spaces and use it a lot in my compositions..too much for some I suppose, but I love it.

The blues

5x7 oil on panel
I love painting wine and flowers together.  The organic shapes of the flowers against the hard shine of the bottle..very different but complimentary.

Wino 35

5x7 oil on panel
Ahh, back to the Wino series..seems like a good time to dive back in.  Actually got inspired by a new space that will be carrying my work here in Mishawaka.  Art + Elements is the studio and gallery of artist Stefanie Buysse.  She has some wine themed artwork in her space which prompted me to start the series back up...and so the Wino series continues.

Grandma's roses

8x10 oil on panel
Roses always remind me of my Grandmother. She grew roses along the walkway to her house. I never really thought much of them when I was a kid, but now I treasure the memories of Grandma and her roses.
In other news, I have an art tutorial published on to paint a portrait in oil.  I hope to continue writing for them every month.  It is a fun new process for me.

Pink prom

6x6 oil on panel
This reminds me of my friend's prom dress from 1990. It was so pink and so fluffy..more of a princess dress really.  I am still experimenting with abstracting the backgrounds with these..I think it worked well in this one.

Color of white

6x6 oil on panel
I love the fact that white is never just white. There are so many colors that make something look white..same thing goes for black too. These roses were no exception.

Garden roses

5x7 oil on panel
More from the photos of the rose garden at Midland Center for the Arts.  I am playing with the backgrounds on these.  Usually my backgrounds are very simplistic so I really focus on the subject.  I am finding that if I abstract the shapes they don't compete.  Seems to be working so far..always learning.

Pink sunshine

5x5 oil on panel $50
The Midland Center for the Arts has a beautiful rose garden.  I took a bunch of photos when my daughter and I visited over the summer.  Needless to say there will be a series of rose paintings.

Autumn still life

6x6 oil on panel $60
The air is crisp and the apples are on the trees...feels like fall to me.

5x7 oil on panel
More from the market.  These are fun to paint..just a few strokes and you have a flower.  Here is the sketch for this one too.

Monday, September 9, 2013

Which way

 5x7 oil on panel
I got some flowers from the farmers market this past weekend.  Needless to say, I will be painting florals this week.  I thought I would post my original sketch with this one.  I always love process photos to see a bit of the thinking that goes into artwork.  Sometimes the sketch is actually better than the finished piece.

Last bit of sun

5x5 oil on primed paper $50
Painting sky is fun. You have endless options and the color range is fantastic. You can push the clouds around and play with the sunlight..very addictive.
Show update!
It is time for another group exhibit at West Coast Coffee downtown Grand Rapids
"Small Works"
Artist reception Nov. 2 6-9pm
All work will be 8x10 and under

Close to home

5x6 oil on primed paper
This was from a photo I took on a drive home..when home was Michigan.  I did a similar painting a while back from the same photo.  I usually get rid of my reference photos once I complete a painting, but I have a few that I keep..this is one.
