This illustrates what painting every day has done to my work.  The top painting was from 2 or 3 years ago and the bottom painting was from last week.  I can't tell you how reassuring that is for me.  I have a long way to go, but I feel like I am on the right path...finally.  I would encourage anyone who is struggling with their work to make a commitment and see what evolves.

Maddi, Jori, and Ellery

5x5 oil on panel
Last set of the Younts girls.  These paintings were holiday gifts for their grandparents.  Now that my commissions are completed for now, I can focus on my show coming up in February.  My new year will begin with a brush in my hand..a good way to start.

Light and shadow

5x5 oil on panel
I am loving the white daisies on the dark background.  The contrast and edges are fun to play with and there are so many grays to make in the shadows.

White light

5x7 oil on panel
Took a break from commissions to do this little gem.  Amazing what background color can do to a simple subject.  These daisies seem so sophisticated and elegant on this black backdrop..I am happy with this one.

8x10 oil on panel
This is the second commission of these girls.  More of a traditional shot for me but still worked out well I think.  Funny how I used to shy away from portraits, and now I enjoy doing them..and I have a giant appreciation for painted portraits in general.  I would mostly pass them by in art museums, and now I stop and study a whole new world of painting opened up.  Always amazing what you find when you open your eyes a little wider.

8x8 oil on panel
This is one of the commissions I have been working on.  You should recognize these girls, they have been models for many of my paintings.  In this painting they take on the persona of news boys from the movies..willing to make deliveries to the pool hall for a small fee of course.  I have two more paintings of them to complete..I will post them when finished.

Warm roses

5x5 oil on panel
I am drawn to warm colors when the weather gets cold.  I love the combination of the pink roses with the brown background..soft and warm, perfect for December.  Tis the season for commissions, which is good but time consuming, which is why I haven't posted in a while.  I will post them later when they have been given as gifts..don't want to ruin it if they follow my blog.  Lots of fun things in the works for the new year.  A solo show in February should keep me busy right away, I will post more on that later when I have details.

6x6 inch oil on panel
This is Aiden, a commission job I just finished.  Sometimes painting for a client can be hard, but this sweet face made this one easy.

5x7 oil on panel
I have spent the last few days working on commission pieces.  This cute little hummingbird looks beautiful and harmless, but oh did it give me fits.  This was my third attempt, the first two have been sanded off and just a horrible memory.  Commissions are always good because they challenge me.  The subject is not something I would normally choose and a lot more detailed, so it made me work harder to get the right result.  I will post the other job I worked on tomorrow.

Pink glow

5x5 oil on panel
I love that little reflection of pink on the yellow rose.  The flowers take on some personality in these little paintings.  The rose is leaning into the daisy as if it is in love, in awe of the daisy's beauty, while the other two are oblivious of the affection.

Flower show

5x5 oil on panel
This group of beauties looks like a cover shot for a fashion magazine.  A bunch of leggy, thin models with beautiful faces posed for the camera...what a show!  Don't hate them because they are beautiful..nature made them that way.

My love of red

5x7 oil on panel
You can't help but love the color represents so many feelings from anger to love.  This painting would be in the love department of course.

Love of color

5x5 oil on panel
Whenever the days get gray it is nice to see some color.  Flowers always do the trick for me, they are bright, happy, and you can mix all colors together.

Just friends

5x7 oil on panel
Falling in love with a friend can be wonderful and devastating.  Most of us have either said it or heard it, the dreaded "Let's be friends".  This painting embodies all those emotions..the viewer gets to choose.

Best friends

5x7 oil on panel
I love coffee, but I love it even more when I can share it over conversation with my best friend.  Unfortunately, my best and oldest friend lives far away, so we usually talk on the phone Sunday mornings while we have our coffee.  I guess it makes the times when we are together even more special.

Autumn morning

5x7 oil on panel
Back to some still life.  Just bought this little coffee cup..I fell in love with the color.  My pallet reflects the season for sure..cold late fall, perfect weather for a hot cup of good coffee.

6x6 oil on panel
After two weeks of no painting it felt good to get back to it.  This is self portrait #2..I have only ridden a horse a couple of times in my life, but this painting makes me look like a seasoned rancher.

8x10 oil on panel
Pleased to meet you..hope you guess my name...that was the tune playing in my head while I painted this one.  Actually, this is a self can read what you like into that. Haven't done a self portrait in a long time..this one was fun.

Is she good or evil..either way this scarlet witch cannot be trusted.

The witch

8x10 oil on panel
She looks innocent enough...but she has a vast knowledge of wicked careful around this one.

One eye

6x6 oil on panel
Playing with lack of color in this one.  Seems to keep with the feeling of the portrait..a little stark and dirty.  This is the same model used for "Hero".  What a difference a mask can make, she can transform from a hopeful hero ready to save mankind to a nasty one eyed pirate ready to steal your loot.

Tuesday, October 9, 2012

6x6 oil on panel
This masked girl is full of confidence and hope..she is ready to fight evil in all it's forms and save us all! This is another painting for the show on November 3, so please keep in mind if you purchase it, it will not ship until after.

8x8 oil on panel
This one speaks for itself.  Don't mess with these girls or you'll get it.  This painting took me a bit longer than normal to finish..I think it was because there are two of them.  I like it though..lots of attitude.

The pirate

5x7 oil on panel
I am working on a set of paintings for an upcoming show.  I love watching kids transform themselves into interesting characters when they dress attempt is to capture those transformations.  This is the first in the series.

Back to back

4x4 oil on panel
Cut these daisies out of their pot this morning.  Still they don't know the cold weather is coming.  This is my last 4x4 for a while..I ran out of panels.  Waiting on a shipment that will hopefully come this week.  Also, working on pieces for an upcoming group show.  Inspired a little by Halloween and how costumes can transform people into many interesting characters.  I will post the first one tomorrow.

Evening rose

4x4 oil on masonite
This is the companion piece to mid day rose.  I made the background as dark as I could..turned out pretty nice..simple.  On another note, I have been studying other painters lately and have decided I really need to step up my game.  Granted, since I have started painting on a more regular basis my work has improved, but I still have sooo far to go.  This is a good thing, I should be constantly learning and moving forward with my painting.  There are so many awesome painters out there..all so inspiring and great examples to strive for.

Mid day rose

4x4 oil on panel
sold I guess I wasn't done with my little flower studies.  My climbing rose has never done that before.  Had a couple 4x4's left, so here they are.  I will post the other tomorrow.

Blue house

6x6 oil on panel
Thought I would try my hand at painting houses in the neighborhood.  This is my first..a little blue house on our street...lots of details to get in..but it seemed to work just fine.

Path to summer

5x5 oil on panel
Pathway from the lake house to the beach..missing summer already.

Beach sky

8x8 oil on panel
We spent a lot of time at the beach this past summer.  The beaches here on Lake Michigan are just beautiful.  This is the path we took to the water every day on our vacation..I can still feel the sand between my toes.

Girl 20

6x6 oil on paper
Isn't she beautiful.  I used to stay away from painting portraits, they were a bit intimidating for me in the past..but you can get so much emotion and feeling from a portrait, and I feel a sense of satisfaction when I paint one.

On display

4x4 oil on panel
The last in this late summer series of begonia paintings.  Although, I noticed many flowers still doing well on my walk through the neighborhood this morning..may need to collect a few.

Shades of pink

4x4 oil on panel
There are two paintings left to post in this little begonia series and this is one of my favorites.

Last dahlias

4x4 oil on panel
Another tiny flower painting before the frost kills them all.  Kinda looking forward to fall and some cooler weather though.

Bit of summer

4x4 oil on panel
There are still some bits of pinks and yellows left in the yard..but the reds and oranges are starting to take over.  Bye bye summer, hello autumn.

Red study 3

4x4 oil on panel
More red begonias!  I have been doing these little 4x4 flower studies lately..they are great practice for color combinations and use of negative space.  I am always drawn to interesting bits of negative space..sometimes that is what makes a painting appealing, not the subject itself, but the spaces in between.

Wednesday, September 19, 2012

Red study 2

4x4 oil on panel
Number 2 in the little red begonia flower studies.  These small 4x4's are so fun to paint.

Tuesday, September 18, 2012

Red study 1

4x4 oil on panel
Decided to do some small studies of these red begonias..they won't be around much longer, the weather is getting chilly here in Michigan.

5x5 oil on panel
This is the brother of the boy in "peaceful journey".  They were perfect tan, sun bleached beach boys..hanging out with their Grandma for the summer...making great memories for sure.

Naa naa!

6x6 oil on paper
Another silly portrait of my daughter...she provides endless subject matter for it!!!

8x8 oil on panel
Fredrick Meijer gardens and sculpture park is here in Grand Rapids.  Not only is it a beautiful place, but there is a big grassy hill that the kids love to run up and down.  I captured these girls watching their friend roll down the much fun.

Peaceful journey

5x7 oil on panel
This boy was learning to ride this board one afternoon out on Lake Michigan.  He did quite well, even when his brother came out and tried to tip him over.  His shorts were fun to paint!

The artist

8x8 oil on panel
Nothing better than sitting in the grass on a beautiful summer evening lost in your own creativity.

Garden snack

8x8 oil on panel
Well, the grapes didn't come from my garden, but the flowers did.  Working on simplifying shapes..really happy with the result.  It is harder than you think it would be.

Wino 28

5x7 oil on panel
Brought this cool wine glass home from a wedding..a sustainable, green all the guests got to pick a glass to drink from during the reception and take it home.  Thought this one would be great to paint, and it was.
